Matariki celebrations and dinner

As part of our Matariki celebrations I helped students learn through some crafting. We learned how to make some flax fish using packing strapping. During these lessons the students not only learned how to weave but they learned some Te Reo.

Teaching ourselves to weave an Ika.
Maori designed biscuits for Matariki.

Our Matariki/ Te Reo learning area in class
I made links to our learning in class where we were reading about Matariki by developing a display in class and enabling students to teach themselves some new language. I was able to use some resources from my own Te Reo study that I am undertaking through Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

Update:

The students and I developed this into a competition, at the end of the term we held a competition where students needed to translate a word to Te Reo to stay alive. Last student standing was the winner. Many of the students liked the challenge and often made the effort to visit the Te Reo learning area to practice.

Update

We have added some more Te Reo words to link with current learning to the Te Reo learning area and we will play the last man standing game at the end of this term too.
